Detection of carbon monoxide within the Magellanic Bridge

چکیده
The Mopra 22-m and SEST 15-m telescopes have been used to detect and partially map a region of 12CO(1-0) line emission within the Magellanic Bridge, a region lying between the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively). The emission appears to be embedded in a cloud of neutral hydrogen, and is in the vicinity of an IRAS source. The CO emission region is found to have a 60 μm/100 μm flux density ratio typical for 12CO(1-0) detections within the SMC, although it has a significantly lower 12CO brightness and velocity width. These suggest that the observed region is of a low metallicity, supporting earlier findings that the Magellanic Bridge is not as evolved as the SMC and Magellanic Stream, which are themselves of a lower metallicity than the Galaxy. Our observations, along with empirical models based on SMC observations, indicate that the radius of the detected CO region has an upper limit of ∼16 pc. This detection is, to our knowledge, the first detection of CO emission from the Magellanic Bridge and is the only direct evidence of star formation through molecular cloud collapse in this region.

The detection of an older population in the Magellanic Bridge
Context. The Magellanic system comprises the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and the less frequently observed Magellanic Bridge and Magellanic Stream. The Bridge is traced by neutral gas and has an observed stellar component, while the Stream consists of gas only, with no observed stellar counterpart to date. Aims. This study uses catalogues created in the direct...
متن کاملLong-term spatial and temporal variability of ambient carbon monoxide in Urmia, Iran
One of the pillars of epidemiologic research on the long-term health effects of air pollution is to estimate the chronic exposures over space and time. In this study, we aimed to measure the intra-urban ambient carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations within Urmia city in Iran, and to build a model within the geographic information system (GIS) to estimate the annual and seasonal means anywhere with...
متن کاملThe chemistry of extragalactic carbon stars
Prompted by the ongoing interest in Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer spectra of carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we have investigated the circumstellar chemistry of carbon stars in low-metallicity environments. Consistent with observations, our models show that acetylene is particularly abundant in the inner regions of low metallicity carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars – more abu...
متن کاملThe Interstellar Medium in the Magellanic Bridge
HST ultra-violet and ground-based optical spectroscopy are presented for DI 1388, an early-type star in the Magellanic Bridge. These data have been supplemented with H I radio mapping of its environment. The spectroscopy shows interstellar components at LSR velocities of 0, 90 and 200 km s-l corresponding to the local ISM, a high velocity cloud and the Magellanic Bridge ISM, respectively. The l...
متن کاملAdsorption of Carbon Monoxide on a (6, 6) Armchair Carbon Nanotube: Ab initio Study
Perhaps the more interesting nanostructures with large application potential, from transistors to probes, are carbon nanotubes. One of the most widely uses of these nanostructures are their applications as gas detector, which is an important application in the field se of environmental technologies. The present work studies the adsorption of carbon monoxide on a (6, 6) armchair carbon nanotube ...
